Introduction

Splitting bills shouldn’t involve complicated calculations, endless reminders, or switching between multiple apps to settle up. Splitvest is a mobile payment app designed to make shared expenses easier to manage, from creating a split and inviting people to tracking contributions and making payments in-app.
The goal was to create a simple, intuitive experience that makes splitting and settling payments feel effortless for everyone involved.

The Challenge

Splitting expenses often becomes more complicated than the payment itself. One person pays upfront, everyone calculates what they owe, and keeping track of who has paid can quickly become messy.
The challenge was to design a seamless experience that simplifies the entire process—making it easy to create a split, understand how much each person owes, track payment progress, and settle expenses without leaving the app.

My Design Process

I approached Splitvest with a focus on making shared payments feel simple, clear, and predictable. I focused on the everyday friction of splitting expenses: tracking who has paid, calculating individual shares, following up on outstanding payments, and switching to another app to settle up.
With these friction points in mind, I mapped out the core experience around the actions users needed to complete: creating a split, adding participants, assigning amounts, tracking payment status, and settling their share.
I started with the user flow, simplifying the journey from creating an expense to everyone completing their payment. I then moved into wireframes to test the structure and hierarchy before introducing visual styling.
As the interface developed, I focused on making important information easy to understand at a glance. Payment statuses, outstanding amounts, and individual contributions were given clear visual hierarchy so users could quickly understand the state of a split.
I also designed the payment experience to happen within the app, removing the need to switch between platforms. Once the core experience was established, I refined the UI and built a reusable component system to keep the experience consistent across the product.
